CELISA CALACAL is assistant editor at The Beacon, where she works with reporters on their stories, oversees social media and still gets to write.

Calacal moved to Kansas City 2018 to intern at KCUR, where she worked for the news team before helping produce the daily talk show, Central Standard. She’s also contributed to KCUR’s newest podcast, A People’s History of Kansas City. Calacal a graduate of Ithaca College in upstate New York, where she was an editor for the college’s award-winning student newspaper, The Ithacan. She also worked as a reporter and newscaster for the college radio station, WICB. 

Calacal was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. Her work has appeared in national publications, including Salon, The Nation and The American Prospect. Her reporting interests include criminal justice, labor rights, inequality and corruption. When not editing or reporting, she can usually be found baking, reading or tweeting. She publishes her own newsletter called Press Pass, which provides commentary on the journalism industry.
