Text messaging is a new way for The Beacon to open up a dialogue with readers.

Today, we’re announcing a new program to deepen our commitment to social justice and racial equity coverage. Race Forward KC is a free engagement series done completely over text messaging. The channel allows for a back and forth — we’ll share local news and updates and we hope you’ll send news tips, questions for our reporters and ideas on how we can all take action to improve our communities. Sign up now.

As we pilot this initiative, you can expect to receive two or three text messages a week from us for the next three months. We will never spam you. If the community finds Race Forward KC helpful, we’ll ask Beacon donors to sustain the program.

The text service is an important step in bridging the digital divide in Kansas and Missouri.  Through texting, we can deliver the news to more of the community, including those without access to secure, reliable internet.

You can support us in this mission by signing up and telling a friend about Race Forward KC. If you have suggestions for how the community can benefit from text messaging around race, racism and racial justice issues, please let us know.
